All of these professions work with Nutrition but all do slightly different roles in healthcare - all equally as important.

Nutritionists generally work in public and general health, advising groups, corporations, the food industry or one-to-one clients according to government guidelines.

Dieticians mostly work in a hospital setting with patients in acute and severe conditions. This is the only statutory protected nutrition profession and most dieticians are employed within the NHS.

I’m a Nutritional Therapist practicing Functional/Personalised Nutritional Medicine and I work on a one-to-one basis with my clients, except for occasional workshops and talks. My clients usually have chronic health issues, of which they haven’t been able to get to the bottom of with public healthcare services. I practice looking at root causes, the body as a whole and we are data/science focused. I keep up to date with the latest scientific research, but always apply it to my clients.

If you’re looking for general nutrition advice then I’m not the practitioner for you I’m afraid!

I’m the person that people go to to find answers to difficult chronic health puzzles, because of my detective like methods and ability to interpret complex functional tests.

I hope that’s cleared up some confusion, because I am technically a qualified Nutritionist, but I don’t identify as one because of my specialism 😊

BREAKFAST or INTERMITTENT FAST? 🍳

Should you eat breakfast? Or should you fast until lunch?

Good question… it depends!

There’s been huge debates about skipping breakfast.

It’s gone from the most important meal of the day to the least important meal.

There’s research to show that intermittent fasting improves longevity, reduces inflammation, supports detoxification, supports fat burning and weight loss.

But then there’s also plenty of situations where fasting has negative effects on the body by increasing the stress hormone cortisol, raising blood sugar, exacerbating/causing hormonal imbalances, causing symptoms of anxiety AND to cause excess weight gain!!

The benefits of fasting really depends on whether you’re male or female. Fasting tends to works better in men because women have cycling hormones… BUT only if the guy is under minimal stress and has a good balance of their blood sugar.

And there’s no need to fast until lunch time. Often fasting until 9 or 10am is enough for some people to support liver detoxification.

So… should you have breakfast? Maybe! Some people don’t feel hungry or feel nauseous in the morning. But then that tells me that their liver might now have finished its work and that their cortisol levels might be too high in the morning - these are issues that will need to be addressed!

Breakfast can help to support lower stress levels and balanced blood sugar - which is super important if you’re a busy person juggling multiple responsibilities, which is… let’s be honest, most of us.

So there is no right or wrong to breakfast - only what’s right for YOU.

Ok... so now what?

Irritable bowel syndrome is just a label for a collection of digestive issues that the conventional healthcare system doesn't have time to get to the bottom of.

Do you want relief from these symptoms or are you going to settle for just a diagnosis?

78% of IBS is actually caused by SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) or SIFO (small intestinal fungal overgrowth) and most people with IBS don't know this.

It's a shame because there IS a way out with SIBO and SIFO. You don't have to live with it forever.

And no, the low FODMAP diet is not something I recommend to treat SIBO/SIFO long term. It might be helpful in the short term, but long term low FODMAPers may be destroying their gut microbiome for worsened IBS in future.

How I got to where I am today 🌈

For 7 years, I trained in Nutritional Therapy at degree level, alongside working full-time as a digital marketer.

I commuted to London two weekends a month for full-day classes.

I studied almost every evening after work in a library until 9 or 10pm.

I spent most of my weekends studying or working on assignments and case studies.

I had to decline most social events so I could dedicate my time to learning about biochemistry and nutrition.

I did two years of real life clinical case studies under supervision before going into the world of clinic.

I did almost two years of clinical practice at a fast paced clinic.

I almost burnt out, I slept terribly and I ended up exhausted.

Last year, I left my life in London and decided to choose freedom. So I bought a one-way ticket to Bali, which gave me the space to focus on me and my goals.

Now I'm running my own online clinic from wherever I want, helping people in need, whilst helping myself live life the way I want to!

Often my sessions with clients involve, not only nutrition, but also health and life coaching. We're often talking about ways to help my clients feel freer and live happier, because what's most important? Your health and happiness.

What immediate steps can you take to move towards a happier life?

I’m on the move again, my partner and I are looking for digital nomad friendly places to base ourselves. We’re loving Barcelona but we reaaaallly struggled to find healthy food in the beginning, especially in smaller seaside towns.

Often most tapas dishes would be cooked heavily in oil, deep fried or many of the meat options would be cured meats. And Spain has definitely gotten way more expensive after the pandemic, as London has too!

I know I need nutrient dense foods in order to feel good. I can’t thrive on carbs and processed meat. I can’t thrive on a plant-based diet either. I need whole foods, preferably home cooked! Thankfully, we’ve just moved into an apartment with a kitchen so we can finally save some money and nourish ourselves better.

Here are some of the healthier meals we’ve had and loved lately. I posted some tips on eating well on holiday yesterday and eating well is possible! A few indulgent meals here and there are bound to happen on holiday - don’t worry about it 🙂 enjoy yourself!

1. Cooked salmon with a vibrant salad with spinach, tomatoes, watercress, pickled red onions, olives, avocado and oranges. Topped with sesame seeds.
2. Thai green curry with shrimp and a beef stirfry - plenty of veg! 3. Poke bowl with chicken and NOT raw fish!! (Poke bowl joints may use raw fish that’s been sitting for hours - avoid)
4. Baked codfish with Mediterranean vegetables and tomato sauce. Pimento padron peppers with maldon sea salt.

Eating well on holiday - is it possible? I gotta tell ya, it's difficult. Especially when you're on holiday in a new place, and that sunshine is making you feel vino vibes!

If eating poorly upsets your digestive system, makes you bloated, lethargic, dampens your mental health, eating poorly can really be a downer.

Here are some tips to help you eat and drink healthier, whilst still enjoying yourself!

🍷 Have a glass of wine if you fancy it, but order water too!
🍸Choose a vodka, lime and soda for a low sugar alcoholic drink - or if you're going alcohol free, omit the vodka completely! This might alleviate the social pressure of drinking.
🍶Try a kombucha - a fermented drink is naturally fizzy and low in sugar. Many restaurants and bars are now stocking this as a healthy alternative.
🥘 It can be tricky to eat out, especially tourism heavy seaside towns - chips, burgers, pizzas galore. Try to choose dishes that have a grilled meat/fish dish and order a side of salad or cooked vegetables. If it isn't on the menu, ask your server if this is something they can do.
🥦 Asian cuisines tend to use more veg so try Thai, Vietnamese or Malaysian
🥖 If you avoid certain foods, i.e. gluten, dairy, seafood, nuts, animal protein, then make sure you write down the translation for "I avoid X food" and show it to your server. They should be able to help choose a dish for you.
🍨 Desserts - hard to resist for sure, but if you find that high sugar desserts exacerbates your symptoms, having desserts in moderation would be great. Try having fruit (amazing in tropical countries), frozen yoghurt, or chia seed pudding.

But most importantly, give yourself a break on holiday and enjoy yourself. Occasional indulgence is unlikely to massively shift your overall health or undo any hard work you've previously done. Sometimes the stress of finding the perfect meal impacts your health negatively too!

Remember, sometimes choices are limited and you have to do the best you can with what's available, and that's okay!

If you’ve been through the conventional healthcare system and you’re dealing with a chronic health issue, you might be a bit fed up of putting up with your symptoms - going from specialist to specialist, searching the internet far and wide, getting “normal” test results every time… you’re not alone.

Nutritional Therapy is based on Functional Medicine and it focuses on pairing scientific research, mechanisms and data, to give us power to make real change.

For most health conditions, we can find out what the root cause is. Health is often quite simple and we just have to go back to scientific basics of how the body works. I’m often simply looking at digestion fundamentals and energy production cycles, just as I did in my training, and when I learnt them at school!!

The four pillars of health quite simply put by @drchatterjee are nutrition, sleep, exercise and stress. Imagine a chair, if one of these legs break, you can still sit on this chair but it’ll be difficult. If two legs break, you won’t be able to sit on it at all.

There is no perfect way to do health for all, because each one of us has lifestyles, work schedules, family lives, location, nutritional needs, DNA, likes, dislikes, and more. So it makes complete sense to have personalised health programmes.

My programmes help you get to the root cause of the symptoms that are causing you grief, and then I use nutrition and lifestyle to correct biochemical imbalances.

My personal bloating and IBS journey 🤰

Before I studied embarked on my training as a Nutritional Therapist 9 years ago (😱), I had already been interested in health. I was drinking green smoothies (or pond water as my coworkers would call it - OGs will know 😅), eating mainly salads and very much plant-based. Little did I know, I was actually slowly causing my IBS to get worse and worse.

🌱Cold foods. Challenging my digestive enzymes that prefer body temp to work optimally.
🌱Raw salads. Hard to digest raw vegetables like kale and broccoli have tough cell walls that require a robust digestive system to deal with them - I didn’t have this.
🌱Oxalates - further causes Candida to proliferate, more on this another time.
🌱Low stomach acid and digestive enzymes to breakdown food for absorption.
🌱Bacteria and yeasts from uncooked veg surviving through my digestive tract contributing to SIBO and SIFO, ultimately causing chronic bloating.

My stools were loose and green coloured - because I ate so many greens and wasn’t chewing properly!! AND I was bloated all the time - immediately looking pregnant after every meal. I was often irritable and anxious.

I had no idea that the way I was eating, which I thought was healthy, was working AGAINST me.

As I understood more and more about the digestive system and the delicate microbiome, I slowly but surely figured out my gut. It took until the last few years of study to really get on top of my chronic bloating.

I now don’t really bloat after a meal… unless I’ve had a HUGE meal or processed food. Most big meals don’t even phase me now.

Many of my clients also suffer from chronic bloating and my job is to figure out why and how to get rid of it. I know how deflating (ironically) it can make you feel, I’ve been there!! But know that it’s not forever and you CAN work through it, without resorting to a god forsaken low FODMAP diet for the rest of your life 👎

Let’s talk about POO 💩

Any time I ask my clients to tell me the frequency and consistency of their poos, they always apologise for TMI 😆 and I say “don’t worry!! I talk about poo every day, it’s my job!”

Everyone should be pooping around 1-3 times a day. Any less, it’s constipation. I get it - public toilets make me squirm and I understand that pooing at work just sometimes can’t happen. It takes some re-programming to poo comfortably. Sometimes it's a mechanism that is deeper rooted.

If you’re constipated and not moving your bowels daily, then this causes a problem that dominoes on the rest of your health. Here’s how it affects your body:

💩 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐮𝐭: slow motility means the bacteria ferments the food you don’t absorb more than usual, causing lots more gas production. This gas makes you bloat, belch AND causes unwanted bacteria/yeasts to thrive. This can lead to IBS, which is linked to a whole host of other issues like nutrient deficiencies, skin issues, mental health issues, poor liver detoxification and more. If you’ve had constipation for prolonged periods of time, you’ll know that it makes you feel very unwell.

💩 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐮𝐭: with your poop hanging around for longer, the endotoxins (LPS) that are made by bacteria can be absorbed into the body. Your liver has to detoxify these endotoxins and then sends it to your gut to be excreted…. But if you’re already severely constipated, then any toxic chemicals are going to be tricky to get rid of! These endotoxins called lipopolysaccharides cause your immune system to produce inflammatory cytokines to fight them. This inflammation has been found to impact depression, anxiety, cognitive decline ie dementia, asthma, eczema, rashes and other skin issues, right through to disorders type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. 💩 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐮𝐭: if your primary elimination pathways is backed up, then waste products that your body needs to get rid of can hang about for too long. This includes toxic versions of your oestrogen - meaning hormonal imbalances are often coexisting with constipation.

I can’t cut out coffee from my life because that would be tragic. I looovvvvee the taste, but I’m not a fan of the caffeine.

I’ll often get decaf but normal espresso definitely tastes better!

Here are some tips to avoid getting anxiety from drinking coffee:

☕️ never drink coffee/caffeinated drinks on an empty stomach
☕️ have a protein and fat rich breakfast beforehand
☕️ finish your last cup by 12pm, because it can take poor caffeine detoxifiers up to 12 hrs to remove it from the system, therefore it can impact your sleep if you’re drinking it late in the day!

Someone tell me why health professionals like @dr.nick.zyrowski and @tim.spector are recommending coffee to help support depression without considering the effects on anxiety?!

Coffee might temporarily raise the neurotransmitters mentioned and lift depression, but raising serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline too much can also cause anxiety and mood swings.

I love coffee as much as the next coffee connoisseur, but I know how it affects mental health. Caffeine raises your cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline. Too much of this can send your adrenals into overdrive, making you feel jittery, on edge and anxious. It can even be the root cause of your insomnia/disrupted sleep.

How much coffee someone can tolerate depends on the individual.

Everybody has differing root causes for depression and making this blanket statement is not helpful.

How much coffee does it take for you to feel anxious??

Hayfever 101 part 2

When dealing with allergy mediated conditions like Hayfever, I will always approach it with a functional medicine approach and think about:

🤧the immune system, inflammation and regulation
🤧gut health and DAO enzyme production to break down histamine
🤧gut microbiome
🤧liver detoxification and clearance of histamine
🤧adrenals and stress response
🤧genetics if a SNP on histamine breakdown is suspected
🤧lack of learning by the immune system in childhood due to birth route, formula feeding, oversanitation, over-use of antibiotics

I’d then use various nutritional strategies to help optimise each of these factors, including supplements! Note that I recommend that everyone has a full health analysis before taking supplements, because not all will apply to you.

There are so many factors to think about when working with allergies and it’s not easy to tackle hayfever and other allergy mediated disorders, especially if you’ve had it a long time. Using the functional medicine approach can certainly help reduce or mitigate symptoms of hayfever, but it takes work and time!

I hope that helps give a different perspective to hayfever!

I remember I got an F in my geography test when I was 14, because my hayfever was so bad 🥹

I’ve had it as long as I remember, but it’s gotten better as I’ve gotten older and learnt about how the immune system works.

Most years I don’t really suffer too badly, but this year, hayfever seems to be back with a vengeance especially after a month of overindulging on deliciously difficult to digest foods in Hong Kong and Japan, and then experiencing 3 days of urticaria in reaction to I still don’t know what 🤦🏻‍♀️😃👍🏼 allergy results from the NHS are taking FOR-EVER! (Oh well, when in Rome)

As a result, I suspect my gut is pretty leaky. Intestinal hyperpermeability AKA leaky gut is where the gut lining, where you absorb your food but also keep unwanted material like allergens out, gets compromised.

As most of your immune system also sits there so dysregulation of the gut, microbiome and gut lining can impact your immune response. Therefore optimising your digestive health helps to support your immune system.

Hayfever is an atopic disorder meaning that it’s allergy leaning. Simply put, the immune system needs to be balanced and regulated, and this depends on the bacteria in your body, your inflammatory response and the learning it did as you grew up (I.e. were we exposed to enough germs? Were our environments oversanitised? Were we vaccinated more than necessary? Were we given too many antibiotics? Is there a family history of immune dysregulation and allergy?).

The immune system is dynamic and it’s ever changing and adapting, which means it is technically possible to reduce your hayfever symptoms, if not, remove them completely. However, it’s not an easy feat and you can regain allergies later in life due to stress, poor diet/lifestyle, poor recovery and sleep.

Functional Tests I run when the bloods don’t give us the answers we need 🕵️‍♀️

Far too often, my clients go to get their bloods done with the GP, and despite all of their symptoms, they’re told that their bloods are normal.

If this has ever happened to you, I’m sure you’ve felt pretty frustrated.

It’s really disheartening when results come back “normal” when you’re not feeling normal, because it means that there’s no further understanding of what’s going on. It’s like reaching a false lead.

My take on this is that the investigation is probably in the wrong place, or whoever is reading the test might not be using optimal ranges as well as reference ranges, OR further testing needs to be done - probably using tests/biomarkers that aren’t available with the NHS due to lack of funding.

Functional tests do cost from £100-500 depending on what’s needed, and not all will apply. Just because the NHS can’t cover it, it doesn’t mean that it’s not available to you. (Note I only choose the ones I think will be most useful in uncovering key info).

I like to think I work like a health detective. Unless the case is closed, I won’t take no for an answer. Everyone deserves to feel healthy.

If you’re struggling with the following symptoms (but not limited to), sometimes with no clear understanding of WHY, then there is definitely more you can uncover if you’re working with someone who knows where to look:

Depression or low moods
Mood swings, irritability, anger
Anxiety and panic attacks
Migraines
Chronic fatigue or constant low energy
Hormone imbalances, irregular periods or difficult with fertility
Shortness of breath
Constant gut issues - bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, food sensitivities
Skin issues like eczema, urticaria, rashes, acne, psoriasis
Difficulty losing weight

And so much more.

There’s always room for improvement in health. Even if you’re told that you’ve got something for life, SOMETHING can be done to improve your quality of life, even if it’s by a margin.

As many of you know, I had been travelling for the last 6.5 months over in Asia and Australia. I had the time of my life! I learnt so much about myself and the world, about what I want in life, I worked on self development, I met the love of my life, I made wonderful friends and I experienced living just as I always dreamt of.

Before I left for Asia, I was working in London and I was BURNT OUT.

I thought “how could I possibly be preaching good health when I can’t even look after myself?” I worked long hours, I started neglecting my own needs like good nutrition, rest and sleep - all because I got addicted to the dopamine hits my job gave me. I was overworked. Don’t get me wrong - I adored my job but I practically lived at work.

I had to leave London for my own good and I had the perfect opportunity to do the trip I had always wanted to. With the encouragement of my amazing support network, I set off to Bali to regain balance in my own life.

Taking that leap was the best decision I ever made, because now I’ve found the immense drive, strength and courage to run my own practice the way I want to.

Now, I’m a solo business owner and I help clients with personalised Nutritional Therapy clients online, worldwide 🙂 Helping people feel better is what I do best and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
